Max Payne 3 Multiplayer Details Surface
Max Payne is a series that’s known for its story and innovative shooting mechanics. It’s a shame that the first two games didn’t feature multiplayer modes, as shooting dudes online in bullet-time could have been an awesome experience.
That’s set to change with Max Payne 3, however and Rockstar aren’t planning on offering a generic run-and-gun multiplayer mode. In an inteview with IGN, Charlie Bewsher – lead designer of Max Payne 3′s multiplayer, said that the narrative of Max Payne is one of the core strengths of the franchise will be an integral part of the game’s multiplayer:
The narrative element of Max Payne 1 and 2, and what we’re doing with 3, is obviously very strong. So when you starting thinking about the multiplayer version of Payne I think you’ve got to address that part of the game. But there’s also a narrative unique to any multiplayer game, though – you sort of get this drama that unfolds.
Rockstar are making every effort to ensure that the game’s multiplayer has the same production values as its single-player campaign. This means that the mode’s story will be told using the series’ iconic motion comics and objectives will be linked together with Max’s equally iconic narration.
The game’s core multiplayer mode is called Gang Wars. A typical match may throw players into the middle of a drug deal that’s gone horribly wrong and task them with picking up cash that’s scattered around the environment.
This doesn’t sound like anything new in itself, but there’s an interesting twist: the nature of the second round will be determined by the events of the first. For example, a brutal and ruthless player in the first round may find that he’s a wanted man with a bounty on his head in the second.
The multiplayer uses ‘Bursts’ (the game’s equivalent to perks) differently to other multiplayer games. Instead of calling in airstrikes, Bursts will allow players to play the game in a variety of different ways.
The ‘sneaky’ Burst makes you appear as if you’re on your enemies team, which sets you up nicely to double-cross them! The ‘paranoia’ Burst makes an enemy unable to distinguish between friend and foe. Of course bullet-time will be available as a Burst as well because let’s face it – everyone loves shooting people in the face in slow motion.
Do you like the sound of Max Payne 3′s multiplayer so far? It’s sounding pretty cool to me. I’m glad that Rockstar are trying to create something that’s unique and distinctly Max Payne.
