The Last Guardian “Making Slow Progress”
The Last Guardian is a PS3 exclusive from the mind of Fumito Ueda (Ico/Shadow of the Colossus). It was first unveiled way back at E3 2009 but Sony has been oddly silent about the game’s progress recently.
In an interview with 1UP, Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida explained that the game’s development has been very challenging, which is why it’s been delayed numerous times:
The project has been making progress, but slow progress. So that’s tough, but we haven’t changed any focus. It’s still a really important project and a vision we want to see realised, and Fumito’s vision is really causing a very difficult challenge for the developers, so there’s some scrapping and rebuilding – iteration in the process. That’s why [it's taking so long].
Last year fans were left wondering whether the game will ever be released when it was revealed that Ueda was leaving Sony. It was later confirmed that Ueda will continue to work for Sony on a contractual basis until development of The Last Guardian has been completed.
Yoshida assured fans that Ueda is still very committed to the project:
You know, we discussed an arrangement so he could focus on the creative side. But his work and his presence on that team never changed, so it was just more a contractual rearrangement, and that was taken [by many] as ‘he left.
He comes in every day, and he’s probably one of the people who works the longest hours.
Let’s hope the game finally comes out this year! I’ve been looking forward to this one for a very long time indeed.
